The quick answer

Public buses leave Arequipa's Terminal Terrestre for Chivay, about 151 km and three to four hours away, and some continue to Cabanaconde. Local sellers publish fares of about S/20–35 to Chivay and S/35 to Cabanaconde. Confirm the departure, the final stop and your return before you travel.

Which bus to take for your plan

You can travel from Arequipa to Colca Canyon by public bus, but first decide whether you need Chivay or Cabanaconde. Chivay is the main gateway to the Colca Valley, with hotels, hot springs and road links to the sightseeing stops. Cabanaconde lies farther along the valley and suits hikers who plan to descend into the canyon.

A ticket to Chivay does not take you to the condor viewpoint or to Cabanaconde. If you want to see Cruz del Cóndor without a tour, you also need onward transport and a realistic way back.

Schedules and fares change. Use the published examples below to plan, then confirm your bus and your return before you travel.

Peru’s official tourism inventory lists 151 km from Arequipa’s Terminal Terrestre to Chivay, about three hours by public bus. Its route entry for Chivay to Cabanaconde adds 55 km, about 1 hour 12 minutes by combi. Allow more time for stops, traffic, weather and connections; these are route estimates, not timetables.

If you would rather skip the timetable puzzle on the way in, the Transport from Arequipa to Cabanaconde (Colca) (from US$25, 4.4/5 from 71 reviews) picks up at Arequipa hotels around 3 AM, stops at Cruz del Cóndor and drops you at your Cabanaconde hotel. It is one-way transport only, without a guide, breakfast or the tourist ticket; our Arequipa to Cabanaconde guide compares it with the bus.

More to book around Arequipa, the Colca Valley and Cruz del Cóndor: day tours, canyon treks, city tours and onward trips toward Puno.

The route from Arequipa into the valley

The road from Arequipa climbs into the high Andes, crosses the high ground near Patapampa and drops into the Colca Valley. From Chivay, it continues west past villages and viewpoints to Cabanaconde.

The usual order of stops is:

Arequipa → Chivay → Yanque and Maca area → Cruz del Cóndor → Cabanaconde

Not every bus covers every section. Some services end in Chivay, others continue through the valley to Cabanaconde, and smaller shared vehicles run between the towns.

  • Chivay: the provincial capital and main service town for travelers staying in the valley, and a handy overnight base for hot springs, village visits and guided sightseeing.
  • Cruz del Cóndor: the best-known condor viewpoint. It is a roadside stop with no bus terminal, so know how you will move on or get back before you arrive.
  • Cabanaconde: a small town near the trekking routes into the canyon, including the trails down to Sangalle and other canyon villages.

For simple sightseeing without transport worries, a guided Colca day trip or two-day tour is easier. For independent trekking, public buses are cheap and flexible.

Where buses to Colca Canyon leave from in Arequipa

Most public services leave from the Terminal Terrestre de Arequipa, or the Terrapuerto building next to it, in the José Luis Bustamante y Rivero district. Peru’s official visitor inventory names this terminal as the start of the public-bus route to Chivay, and local transport guides list operators there.

Not every departure is sold from the same counter or boards from the same bay. One local bus guide mentions transport offices behind the terminal, on Javier Pérez de Cuéllar street, for Chivay services. Check it before you go, because a company listed there may have moved.

Practical steps at the station

  1. Ask for the next confirmed departure to Chivay or Cabanaconde, naming the town clearly.
  2. Check whether the bus goes straight to your town or needs a change in Chivay.
  3. Confirm the boarding point, not just the ticket desk.
  4. Ask for the expected arrival time and whether the bus stops at Cruz del Cóndor.
  5. If you are coming back independently, ask about the last usable return departure before you commit to the outward trip.
  6. Keep your ticket, and carry cash in soles for smaller local vehicles.

Useful questions in Spanish:

  • ¿Este bus va hasta Cabanaconde o solo hasta Chivay? Does this bus go all the way to Cabanaconde or only to Chivay?
  • ¿Sale del Terminal Terrestre o de otra oficina? Does it leave from the main bus terminal or another office?
  • ¿A qué hora llega? What time does it arrive?
  • ¿Hay transporte de regreso hoy? Is there transport back today?
  • ¿Para en la Cruz del Cóndor? Does it stop at Cruz del Cóndor?

The route may not appear on the big online bus-booking sites. Local companies sell many seats at the terminal, at their own offices or through local agents.

Arequipa to Chivay by public bus

The Arequipa–Chivay bus is the clearest public option if you want a night in the Colca Valley and are not trekking to the canyon floor.

Journey time

The official tourism inventory gives 151 km and about three hours from terminal to terminal. A September 2026 Arequipa transport guide puts the bus ride at about four hours, or five to six hours door to door once you add taxis and waiting. Plan around a loose arrival window.

The road climbs high before it drops into Chivay, so the weather can be very different from Arequipa’s. Extra stops add time.

Fares to Chivay

The same September 2026 guide gives an indicative one-way fare of about S/20–35 and names Andalucía, Reyna and Milagros among the companies on the route. Treat the range as a planning figure; fares differ between companies and services.

When you compare prices, check what the fare covers. The Colca tourist ticket is separate, and so are hotels, meals, local transfers and most entrance fees.

After you arrive in Chivay

From Chivay you can:

  • Check into your hotel and explore the town.
  • Arrange a transfer to a nearby village, depending on where you are staying.
  • Visit the La Calera hot springs by local transport; entry is charged separately. Our Colca hot springs guide covers the options.
  • Continue west toward Cruz del Cóndor and Cabanaconde on a confirmed bus or shared combi.
  • Arrange travel back to Arequipa or, with a separately booked service, on to Puno; see our Arequipa to Puno via Colca guide.

Chivay is not the condor viewpoint. Do not plan to walk from Chivay to Cruz del Cóndor; it is about 42 km by road.

Arequipa to Cabanaconde by bus

If you are hiking into the canyon, Cabanaconde is usually a better starting town than Chivay. You have two ways to get there.

Option 1: A through bus to Cabanaconde

La Casa de Santiago, a Cabanaconde hotel that sells local bus tickets, lists Andalucía and Trasandino on the Arequipa–Chivay–Cabanaconde route, with a stop at Cruz del Cóndor on some services.

It publishes a fare of S/35 one way in either direction. When we checked its timetable on 2 November 2026, it showed departures from Arequipa at 1:00, 3:30 and 13:00 (Andalucía) and 4:30 and 12:30 (Trasandino), with the 3:30 bus due in Cabanaconde around 8:00. Local timetables differ from source to source and are not updated together, so do not treat any posted schedule as proof that a bus runs on your date.

Before buying, ask:

  • Does the bus definitely go on to Cabanaconde, or does it end in Chivay?
  • Will it stop at Cruz del Cóndor, and can you board there later if needed?
  • Where will you get off? Cabanaconde has no bus station; buses stop at the main square.
  • How do you buy the return ticket, and where does the bus pick you up?

Option 2: Bus to Chivay, then a combi

You can also take a bus to Chivay and a shared combi on to Cabanaconde. MINCETUR lists the Chivay–Cabanaconde leg at 55 km and about 1 hour 12 minutes. In practice, allow one to two hours, especially if the vehicle stops often or you wait for it to fill.

A local operator guide describes daytime combis between Chivay and Cabanaconde, but they do not always connect with buses from Arequipa. This route makes sense if you want a night in Chivay first or the direct Cabanaconde bus does not suit you.

Do not arrive late assuming a shared vehicle will still be running. Ask locally about the last departure and have a fallback for the night.

Reaching Cruz del Cóndor without a guided tour

Cruz del Cóndor is the best-known roadside viewpoint for Andean condors, about 42 km beyond Chivay according to Peru’s official tourism site. Mornings are the usual viewing time, and sightings are never guaranteed.

There are two realistic ways to get there on your own:

From Cabanaconde, take an early bus or combi heading east toward Chivay and ask to be dropped at Cruz del Cóndor. Know which vehicle you will take onward before you get off. The La Casa de Santiago page says combis leave Cabanaconde’s square from about 6 AM to 3 PM and stop at the viewpoint, and that short hops such as Cabanaconde to Cruz del Cóndor are paid on board. Seats and frequency are not guaranteed.

From Chivay, arrange a westbound bus, combi, taxi or a short booked excursion to the viewpoint. This is harder than it looks if the public service runs too late for the morning or has no handy return.

A ticket to Chivay does not buy a seamless day of sightseeing. Your plan needs three parts: the outward trip, the viewpoint stop, and the onward or return trip.

If you have only one day for Colca Canyon, a tour such as the From Arequipa: Colca Canyon Full-Day Guided Tour with Meals (from US$42, 4.6/5 from 1,799 reviews) is usually more practical than lining up several public vehicles.

Getting back to Arequipa from Colca Canyon

From Chivay

Chivay is the easiest place in the valley to arrange the trip back. Check at the bus terminal or the company office for a confirmed departure and boarding point. The ride usually takes about as long as the outward trip, but road and weather can delay you.

Do not count on the last bus of the day to make a flight or a fixed connection in Arequipa. Leave room for delays.

From Cabanaconde

Some services run via Chivay to Arequipa; others may need a change. The bus companies have their offices on Cabanaconde’s main square, which is where to ask about departures, and the La Casa de Santiago page suggests buying the return ticket there when you arrive.

Arrange your return before you start a canyon trek. Hiking days can run long, and reaching the square exhausted without knowing the last bus is an avoidable problem.

From Cruz del Cóndor

The viewpoint is not a terminal, so you may have to flag down or board a local vehicle on a working route. Check stopping rules and rough passing times in advance. If you cannot confirm a dependable option, book a transfer or travel with a tour so you are not stranded.

Compare the total trip cost, including the Colca ticket, local transfers, hotels and any hot-spring entry. A bus ticket is cheap, but several extra rides or a private return can wipe out much of the saving. Our Colca tour prices guide adds up the extras, and the two-day tour guide compares overnight trips.

What the Colca tourist ticket costs

Taking the bus does not exempt you from the Colca tourist ticket when you enter the visitor circuit.

AUTOCOLCA’s published standard adult rates, checked November 2026:

Visitor categoryAdult ticket
Foreign visitor (standard international rate)S/70
Eligible Latin American visitorS/40
Peruvian visitorS/20

Children and some other visitors have their own rates or exemptions; foreign children aged 6 to 15 and foreign residents pay S/20. Carry ID that supports your category. The authority sets eligibility, and not every foreign resident or passport holder qualifies for the Latin American rate.

AUTOCOLCA says the ticket covers access to its tourist circuit only; guiding and transport cost extra. The La Calera hot springs and the Uyo Uyo archaeological site are not included. The authority sells tickets electronically and at its control and interpretation center in Chivay. Check the official AUTOCOLCA services and rates before you travel.

You pay this ticket on top of any bus fare above.

Independent itineraries by bus

One night: Chivay and a flexible valley visit

Day 1: travel from Arequipa to Chivay. Leave time to check in, explore the town and, if it fits, visit nearby sights or hot springs.

Day 2: visit Cruz del Cóndor with a morning transport option you have already confirmed, or on a short booked excursion. Return via Chivay and take a confirmed bus to Arequipa. If onward services are uncertain, add a second night instead of forcing a risky connection.

This plan suits travelers who care more about seeing the valley than trekking into it.

Two nights: Chivay plus Cabanaconde

Day 1: Arequipa to Chivay; night in the valley.

Day 2: continue toward Cruz del Cóndor and Cabanaconde, with time for viewpoints and a gentle walk if conditions allow. Night in Cabanaconde.

Day 3: return toward Chivay and Arequipa on confirmed public transport, with spare time for any change.

This is a flexible sightseeing plan and does not replace a two-day canyon-floor trek. If you plan a demanding hike, add the trekking days and book accommodation to match. Our Arequipa and Colca itinerary sets out two-, three- and four-day versions with tours.

Trekking: go to Cabanaconde first

If you have booked or planned a trek, travel to Cabanaconde the day before you start walking. Confirm the trailhead, the descent and ascent times, your overnight lodging and current trail conditions. Do not try to fit a long bus ride, a big descent and an uncertain last bus into one day. Our self-guided trek guide covers the trails.

For organized treks, check whether the operator already includes pickup in Arequipa. If it does, you do not need a bus ticket. Our Colca trekking guide compares the guided options.

Altitude on the bus ride

Colca is a canyon, but the drive from Arequipa crosses very high ground. The road passes near Patapampa at about 4,900 m before dropping to Chivay at about 3,600 m. Arequipa is much lower, at about 2,300 m.

Climbing fast can cause altitude illness even if you are not hiking. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness and tiredness, and fitness does not reliably protect you. Where you can, spend time adjusting before going higher, and avoid hard exertion while you adjust.

Do not go higher to sleep if you have symptoms of altitude illness. Worsening symptoms, confusion, poor coordination or breathlessness at rest need urgent medical help and descent. The CDC’s high-altitude guidance explains the risks, and our Colca altitude guide applies them to this road. See a travel-health professional beforehand if you have had altitude problems or have relevant health concerns.

Bring water, warm clothing and sun protection even when Arequipa feels mild.

Bus travel in the rainy season

Peru’s tourism board gives November to March as the rainy season in the Andes. Conditions vary from year to year, and no one can predict a single day’s weather.

For trips between November and March, plan for:

  • Possible road delays, poor visibility and changed sightseeing stops.
  • Rain layers, plus warm clothing for the highest stretch of road.
  • Extra time before flights, trains or long-distance buses.
  • More caution about canyon trekking, especially after heavy rain.
  • A check on road and transport conditions with a local provider shortly before you leave.

Buses and tours do not always keep to schedule in severe weather. If the forecast looks unsafe, take a later departure or change the plan instead of forcing a tight connection. Our rainy-season trekking guide covers the trails in the wet months.

What to pack for the public bus

  • Cash in Peruvian soles: for local vehicles, snacks and small costs.
  • Passport or photo ID: needed for the ticket categories and often for buying bus tickets.
  • A warm layer and a waterproof jacket: conditions change fast at altitude.
  • Water and a light snack: stops and services can be few.
  • A phone with offline maps: reception is patchy.
  • A power bank: long travel days drain batteries.
  • Your hotel details: the address and how to get there on arrival.
  • Return-trip notes: the company, boarding point and confirmed departure, saved offline.

Keep valuables with you, and do not put important medicines, documents or electronics in luggage you cannot reach during the ride. Our Colca packing list covers the rest.

Mistakes to avoid on an independent trip

Buying a ticket to the wrong town. Chivay and Cabanaconde serve different purposes, so confirm your destination before paying.

Assuming every bus stops at Cruz del Cóndor. Some do and some do not; ask before boarding.

Treating a timetable screenshot as a booking. Schedules on third-party websites can be old or contradict each other, so confirm directly.

Treating the condor viewpoint as a terminal. Work out how you will leave the lookout before getting off.

Forgetting the tourist ticket. The visitor-circuit ticket is separate from your bus ticket.

Ignoring altitude and weather. Both often matter more than the kilometers on the map.

Planning a tight same-day flight. The road trip can run longer than forecast, especially in wet weather.

The simplest independent route

For a first independent visit, the easiest plan is Arequipa to Chivay, a night in the valley, then on to the viewpoint or Cabanaconde with a confirmed local connection. Hikers can head straight for Cabanaconde and start the trek the next day.

Public transport usually costs less, but it needs flexibility. Confirm both the outward and return service, allow for mountain-road delays and budget separately for the tourist ticket. If you have only one day and mainly want to see condors, compare an organized excursion before committing to several separate rides; our guide to getting to Colca from Arequipa sets out every option.
