What makes the two-day trek demanding?
The guided two-day trekking tour from Arequipa fits the journey to the canyon, a long descent and valley walk into its first day. The second day begins with the climb out. A short calendar duration does not make this a short or easy walk.
| Stage | Advertised schedule | What to consider |
|---|
| Arequipa to the canyon | Very early pickup, breakfast stop | Sleep and prepare your bag beforehand |
| Descent to San Juan | About three hours | Long downhill sections can tire legs |
| Valley walk to Sangalle | About two and a half hours | More walking follows lunch |
| Ascent to Cabanaconde | About three hours early next morning | Sustained uphill effort before onward travel |
Day one: viewpoints before the descent
After collection from your Arequipa accommodation, the tour travels towards Chivay for breakfast. Cruz del Cóndor is a sightseeing stop before the hiking begins. The route then descends from the San Miguel area towards San Juan de Chuccho, where the programme pauses for lunch.
The afternoon continues through Cosñirhua and Malata towards Sangalle. The overnight lodge and pool are part of the canyon setting, but lodging inclusion depends on the option purchased. Ask about the room arrangement before arriving: basic canyon accommodation should not be confused with a full-service hotel in Chivay.
Day two: the climb is the main event
An early start puts the ascent before the later travel stages. The operator estimates around three hours to Cabanaconde. Do not turn that estimate into a personal target; discuss your fitness and recent hiking experience with the provider if you are unsure the group schedule fits.
The return programme includes valley viewpoints, Maca, an optional hot-spring visit and lunch in Chivay. The standard endpoint is near Arequipa’s main square, while a separately selected option continues to Puno. Hotel drop-off in Arequipa is not listed as included.
Basic versus inclusive options
The listing offers transport and guiding with optional accommodation and meal coverage. The tourist ticket, hot springs, final Chivay lunch and gratuities remain separate. Its basic-option guidance specifically asks travellers to bring additional local cash for lodging, meals and admissions. Compare total expected spending, not just the headline ticket amount.
The Puno option requires particular attention: the provider describes a regular bus departing Chivay at 1 PM and arriving around 7 PM, followed by making your own way to your hotel. Large-bag storage in Cabanaconde costs extra. Confirm that arrangement before pickup.
Who should take three days instead?
Choose the three-day route if you want a separate night in San Juan and more time between valley stages. It still includes the final ascent. If you want views without that commitment, the two-day sightseeing tour is the more appropriate comparison.
The selected two-day provider excludes children under 15, pregnant travellers and people over 60. These are product-specific restrictions; do not assume a different operator follows identical rules. Check suitability before making a nonrefundable travel connection.
