Start with the direction of your Peru trip
If Arequipa is already on your itinerary, use it as the base for the Colca Canyon full-day tour with meals or an overnight alternative. If you are visiting Lake Titicaca first, the Puno-to-Colca trip ending in Arequipa fits the opposite direction. Neither of these products includes pickup in Cusco.
| Route plan | Separately arrange | Colca product to consider | Final city |
|---|
| Cusco to Arequipa, then a day trip | Transport to Arequipa and hotel | Return full-day sightseeing | Arequipa |
| Cusco to Arequipa, then east | Transport to Arequipa and hotel | Two-day Colca-to-Puno route | Puno |
| Cusco to Puno, then west | Transport to Puno and hotel | Two-day Puno departure | Arequipa |
Connecting through Arequipa
Treat the journey from Cusco as its own travel leg. Check actual transport availability for your dates, arrive at your Arequipa accommodation and confirm the tour pickup location. A scheduled arrival close to the middle-of-the-night collection is a fragile plan: a late incoming service can leave you without time to check in or prepare.
The featured full-day Colca sightseeing starts with pickup around 2:45–3:20 AM, then travels towards Chivay, the canyon viewpoints and optional hot springs before returning to Arequipa. It includes breakfast and buffet lunch; the canyon ticket and optional baths are extra. Read the day-tour comparison for the separate 6 AM alternative.
Connecting through Puno
For a westbound itinerary, arrive in Puno first and spend the necessary time there before the Colca departure. The featured Puno product collects from central hotels around 6–6:15 AM, travels to Chivay for an overnight stay, then visits the canyon and continues to Arequipa the following day.
Accommodation in Chivay is not included in that product. Book it separately and share the address with the operator. Its booking also does not include a Lake Titicaca islands excursion. Keep these reservations distinct when checking totals and cancellation terms.
Avoid mixing separate bookings into one promise
A flight, bus ticket, hotel and canyon excursion may form a sensible itinerary, but separate suppliers do not automatically protect one another’s connections. Leave a buffer that reflects how important the next departure is. Confirm luggage allowances with each transport provider rather than assuming a suitcase accepted on the first leg fits every later vehicle.
For travellers going from Arequipa onward to Puno, the two-day Colca sightseeing and Puno route can reduce backtracking. That is a different booking from the round-trip day tour shown above. See the Arequipa-to-Puno comparison before finalising hotel nights.
When to simplify the plan
If your Cusco itinerary has no spare travel days, do not squeeze Colca into what appears to be a local day excursion. Decide whether the canyon justifies adding the connection and an appropriate overnight stop. Travellers focused on hiking also need time for the actual two-day or three-day trek, beyond reaching its departure city.
